George Lynde is a representational painter of domestic scenes and still life, and of landscapes. He received formal instruction in painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Before attending the SMFA he was trained as an architect (MArch, Harvard Graduate School of Design) and went on to have a career as a filmmaker and corporate events producer. Post SMFA, besides painting on his own, he continued learning from painters Catherine Kehoe (MassArt), Joel Janowitz (in his studio) and Ilona Anderson (New England School of Art and Design at Suffolk University). The painters whose work Lynde looks to for inspiration are mainly contemporary painters, some local to Boston such as George Nick, Catherine Kehoe and Joel Janowitz, others elsewhere, John Dubrow, Dmitri Cavander, Sangram Majumdar, Tai-Shan Shierenberg, Alex Kanevsky and Euan Uglow. Lynde credits Kehoe for introducing him to most of the “others elsewhere” painters. The subjects of Lynde’s paintings typically are everyday objects and scenes, often including some aspect of surprise, and that will be meaningful in a general way to viewers. He paints in oil, often on wood panels, and in two locations, his home studio in Newton, Massachusetts, and in Provincetown on Cape Cod. He exhibits his work both in the Boston area and in Provincetown. |
